MEP Minister Chen Jining met with Mr. Karmenu Vella, EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in Beijing today, and the two exchanged views on issues of common concern in the field of environmental protection.
First of all, Minister Chen welcomed the visit of Mr. Vella and the delegation on behalf of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and briefed the guests on the overall environmental protection status of China. He noted that Chinese government has paid great attention to environmental protection work and integrated the construction of ecological civilization into the overall approach of promoting economic, political, cultural, social and ecological progress in the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics. While seeking green, circular and low-carbon economic development under the guidance of ecological civilization, it has exerted all efforts in tackling the conflict between economic growth and environmental protection to promote the win-win result in both fronts.
Minister Chen pointed out that China and the EU have extensive cooperation potential in the area of environmental protection. The advanced concepts, polices and measures EU has boasted in the sector of environmental protection are of great reference significance to China. With the upcoming 13th "Five-Year" Plan period, China will further its efforts in the prevention and control of air, water and soil pollution centered on environmental quality betterment, strengthen the legislative construction relating to environmental protection and put more emphasis on the promotion of environmental governance under the regulation of the market and the industry, all of which have provided new areas and platform for environmental protection cooperation between the two sides in the new phase. China would like to join hands with EU to heighten pragmatic collaboration in a bid to make positive contribution to the deepening of EU-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the advancement of global sustainable development cause in light of the principles of mutual respect, promoting communication, focusing on priority areas and mutual benefit and win-win result.
Mr. Vella expressed his compliments to the efforts and achievements China has made in environmental protection. He indicated that the environmental protection cooperation between EU and China are constantly deepening, and he is satisfied with the results. He expects further enhancement of pragmatic cooperation in this area between the two sides based on the current foundation to make more contribution to the development of EU-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The two also exchanged views on a range of issues of common concern including China-EU Environmental Governance program, biodiversity conservation, natural assets auditing and chemical management.
