On May 31, the premiere of the public service posters in commemoration of the World Environment Day on June 5, 2012 was held in Beijing. MEP Vice Minister Pan Yue attended the premiere and complemented away the posters to private companies.
On June 4, Li Keqiang, a member with the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, State Council Vice Premier, and Chairperson of the National Committee of the Biodiversity Conservation in China chaired the first session of the national committee and gave a speech. The session deliberated the China Action Plan for United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020) and Task Assignment for the Action Plan for Implementation of Biodiversity Conservation Strategy in China. Members with the national committee and principals of relevant State departments attended the meeting. Zhou Shengxian, Vice Chairperson of the National Committee and MEP Minister, spoke at the session. Secretary General of the National Committee and MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie were also present.
On the same day, MEP printed and distributed the Circular on the Pilot Analysis of Environmental and Economic Trends.
On June 5, the high-profile forum on optimizing the economic growth by environmental protection in commemoration of the World Environment Day, which was co-sponsored by MEP, NDRC, MOST, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF), and the people’s government of Beijing opened in Beijing. MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian presented a keynote report. Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, Deputy Secretary of the leading CPC members’ Group of ACWF and Vice Chairman Meng Xiaosi, and Vice Mayor of Beijing Municipal Government Hong Feng spoke at the forum, which was chaired by MEP Vice Minister Wu Xiaoqing. Delegates from UNEP Beijing Office, from MEP departments, regional offices, and affiliated institutions, and from NGOs, firms, colleges, and media also came to the forum.
On the same day, the evening gala in commemoration of the World Environment Day and themed on Side by Side towards Green Consumption was held in Beijing Exhibition Center, under the sponsorship of MEP, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, ACWF, and UNEP. MEP Vice Minister Pan Yue, Vice Chairperson of NPC Environment and Resources Conservation Committee Wang Qingxi, Vice Chairperson of CPPCC Committee of Population, Resources and Environment Qian Guanlin, Secretary of the Secretariat of Central Committee of Communist Youth League Wang Hongyan, as well as leading officials from MEP, MOE, and Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee joined the evening gala.
On the same day, the State Council Information Office held a news conference in Beijing, announcing the 2011 Report on the State of Environment in China. MEP Vice Minister Wu Xiaoqing answered the questions raised by domestic and international reporters.
On the same day, the second photo exhibition on China’s energy conservation and emissions reduction achievements opened at China Millennium Monument. MEP Chief Engineer Wan Bentai gave an opening speech for the exhibition.
On June 7, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian presided over the ministerial executive meeting, which deliberated and adopted in principle eight emission standards including Emission Standard for Pollutants from Iron Ore Mining and Processing Industry and Emission Standard for Air Pollutants from Iron and Steel Sintering and Pelletizing Industry, Measures on the Administration of the Exchange Program for Officials Managed by Ministry of Environmental Protection (on trial), and heard the report on the state of environment in China between 2001 and 2010. Vice Ministers Pan Yue, Zhang Lijun, Wu Xiaoqing, Zhou Jian, and Li Ganjie, Chief of the Permanent Discipline Inspection Group sent by CPC Central Discipline Inspection Commission Fu Wenjuan, a member of the leading CPC members’ group He Jie, and Chief Engineer Wan Bentai attended the meeting.
On the same day, MEP announced the amendments to Technical Specifications for Centralized Incineration Facility Construction on Hazardous Waste (HJ/T176—2005), which would take effect as of the day of announcement.

On June 9, MEP printed and distributed the Provisional Measures on the Up-to-Standard Check and Acceptance of the Environmental Protection Departments Nationwide on their Standardization of Environmental Emergency Response Capacities.
On June 13, a video conference was held in Beijing among the leading CPC members’ groups (temporary CPC committees) of MEP-affiliated organizations. MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian spoke at the conference, which was chaired by Vice Minister Pan Yue. Chief of the Permanent Discipline Inspection Group sent by CPC Central Discipline Inspection Commission Fu Wenjuan, and a member of MEP leading CPC members’ group and Department of Institutional Reform and Human Resources Management He Jie were also presented.
On June 15, MEP announced the List of Entities Certified for the Environmental Impact Assessment of Construction Projects (3rd batch in 2012).
On June 19, the 2012 national meeting on environmental publicity and education was held in Weihai Municipality, Shandong Province in East China. MEP Vice Minister Pan Yue spoke at the meeting.
On the same day, the 2012 symposium on environmental supervision among South China region was held in Guilin Municipality, capital of Guangxi Autonomous Region in South China. MEP Vice Minister Zhang Lijun and Lin Nianxiu, a member of the standing committee of CPC Guangxi regional committee and Vice Chairman of the regional government attended the symposium.
On the same day, MEP began to gather public opinions and comments on the Report on the Comprehensive Safety Check of Civil Nuclear Facilities Nationwide and the Twelfth Five-Year Plan on Nuclear Safety and Prevention and Control of Radioactive Pollution and the 2020 Vision Goals.
On June 20, Premier Wen Jiabao attended the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and gave a speech on Work Together to Write a New Chapter in Promoting Sustainable Development for Mankind. The UN Conference is another large-scale and high-profile international conference in the field of sustainable development following the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development and 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. The Conference focused on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development, gave a comprehensive evaluation of the progress and gap in the field of sustainable development over the past two decades, reaffirmed the political commitments, and responded to the arising problems and challenges of sustainable development. The heads of States and Governments of over 120 countries presented at the conference. MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian accompanied Premier Wen Jiabao to the conference. MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie, Chief Engineer for Nuclear Safety and Director General of Department of International Cooperation Xu Qinghua were also present.
On the same day, MEP Vice Minister Wu Xiaoqiing met in Beijing with a delegation led by U.S. EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe. The two sides exchanged views on issues of common concern.

On June 21, Premier Wen Jiabao attended the side event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 20th anniversary of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, discussing with Council Members and environment ministers the sustainable development path of China and the world. MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian attended the side event.
On the same day, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met separately in Rio de Janeiro with U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, Italian Minister for the Environment, Territory and Sea Clini, Environment Ambassador of Swedish Environment Ministry Annika Markovic, Brazilian CCICED Council Member John Forgách, and Danish Environment Minister Ida Auken, exchanging environmental issues of common concern.
On the same day, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with Minister of Environment Canada Kent. The two sides exchanged views on environmental issues of common concern. The two sides exchanged views on the UN conference and the bilateral cooperation in the environment field. On June 28, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met in Berne, Capital of Switzerland with Ms. Doris Leuthard, Federal Councilor of Switzerland, also head of Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC). The two sides exchanged views on bilateral cooperation on air pollution prevention and control, water pollution treatment, biodiversity conservation, negotiations to prepare a global legally binding instrument on Mercury, climate change, and environment and trade. Zhou and Leuthard signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation between Ministry of Environmental Protection of People's Republic of China and the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications of Switzerland. MEP Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety, also Director General of Department of International Cooperation Xu Qinghua and Chinese Ambassador to Switzerland Wu Ken were present at the meeting.
On June 29, a joint meeting was held on the sideline of the 27th Session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress to make inquiries about the performance of the State Council on Safeguarding Drinking Water Safety. MEP Vice Minister Zhang Lijun attended the meeting and responded to those inquiries.
On June 29, MEP announced the list of nitric acid producers in compliance with the environmental requirements (1st batch).
