China and South Africa sign an MOU on the intergovernmental cooperation on climate change

On Sept. 2, Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment Li Ganjie and South African Minister of Department of Environmental Affairs signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of South Africa on the Cooperation in the Climate Change Area (hereinafter referred to as the MOU), on behalf of their respective governments, under the witness of President Xi Jinping and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa at the Great Hall of the People.  

In accordance with the MOU, the two sides will conduct cooperation on such priority areas as carbon emission trading, green and low-carbon urbanization, carbon capture, utilization and sequestration technologies, collection of greenhouse gas information, and the management of greenhouse gas database. They will also strengthen the capacity building in the area of climate change.
