This standard is formulated for the purposes of enforcing the Environment Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China and Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law of the People’s Republic of China, meeting the needs of the central government for the modernized, delicate, and IT-based management of the water environment, setting standards for the use and management of river, river reach, lake, and reservoir codes by the national environmental protection branches, consolidating the groundwork for labeling the water bodies, and advancing and increasing the IT elements in water environment management. This standard specifies the coding rules for the rivers, river reaches, lakes, and reservoirs across the country, by dividing the rivers into 63 watersheds in seven basins, based on the national basic geo-information data, and by the principle of uniqueness, integrity, and extendibility. The Appendix A to this standard is referential. This standard is the original version.
