 MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met with Vice Environment Minister Kondo Shoichi from Japan when he attended the 13th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting in Busan, South Korea on April 28. Zhou Shengxian firstly on behalf of MEP expressed condolences to Japanese people who died in the earthquake and tsunami, his sympathy and solitude through Kondo Shoichi to his Japanese counterparts and people suffering from the disaster as well as respect to Japanese side that overcomes difficulty after the major disaster and attends this meeting. They spoke highly of active and effective cooperation between the two countries in environmental protection field over the past 30 years. Vice Minister Kondo Shoichi highlighted that the promoting environmental cooperation based on correct understanding about the history of the two countries will play an active role in facilitating China-Japan relations and regional peace. Talking about secondary environmental disasters resulting from the earthquake in Fukushima, Zhou Shengxian hoped that Japanese side inform China in time with comprehensive and accurate information about nuclear accident in Fukushima, take effective measures to control potential import & export of waste subject to radioactive pollution based on enhanced management of illegal trans-boundary movement of waste,strengthen management on discharge of waste water from nuclear power station to marine waters and minimize adverse impacts on other countries. Japanese Vice Minister Kondo Shoichi expressed thanks to post-quake support from the Chinese side. He said, Japan now is taking measures at all costs to eliminate the adverse impacts of nuclear power station accidents. Meanwhile, he hoped that the two countries should strengthen their cooperation in areas such as illegal trans-boundary movement of electronic waste, prevention and control of sand & dust storms and ocean floating debris. He hoped that China could keep on its support to post-economic recovery in Japan.
