Mr. Zhou Shengxian, MEP Minister and CCICED Chinese Executive Vice Chairman, met with Achim Steiner, Executive Director of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and Vice Chairman of CCICED in Guiyang on July 20 during the CCICED 2013 Roundtable Meeting.

First, Zhou extended warm welcome on Mr. Steiner's arrival in Guiyang for the Eco Forum and CCICED 2013 Roundtable Meeting. Then Zhou focused on China's latest measures in air pollution prevention. Zhou said that the State Council has approved the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan and has begun research on ten major measures in air pollution prevention. Specific requirements were raised in the following categories: promoting the upgrade and optimization of industrial structures, and eliminating overcapacities; accelerating the adjustment of energy structure with a limitation imposed on overall coal consumption; strictly controlling vehicle pollution and improving fuel quality; strengthening comprehensive pollution management and carrying out joint control of multiple pollutants, etc. Zhou pointed out that the understanding and support from the international society are vital for China's work on environmental protection and the consistent support from UNEP, one of China's trusted partners, in environmental protection, is most important.

Mr. Steiner thanked Zhou and spoke highly of China's environmental protection work, especially in air pollution prevention. Mr. Steiner said that he is very much looking forward to strengthening and deepening cooperation with China. The two sides also exchanged views on deepening cooperation between CCICED and UNEP, on 2013 Global South-South Development Expo and other matters.
