The annual meeting of the Great Mekong Subregoinal Environmental Work Group was held at Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province from May 17 to 18. MEP Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety Xu Qinghua attended the meeting and proposed countries in the area should help each other, share benefits and jointly protect the environment. Xu noted that the six countries in the Great Mekong subregion were connected by stretching mountains and waters with integrating economy, society and the environment. To achieve sustainable development of the region has always dominated the dialogue and cooperation of the subregion. As a resolute supporter and practitioner for subregional sustainable development, the Chinese government pays high attention to cooperation with all related countries. Through unremitting effort Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region who have participated in subregional environmental cooperation have seen stable environmental quality and improved environmental management capability, making positive contributions to the sustainable development of the river basin. Xu pointed out that with the support of Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other international organizations and the core environmental projects of the Great Mekong Subregion, particularly the project of biodiversity corridor, China has achieved notable progress in ecological building, capacity building and environmental awareness while participating in subregional environmental cooperation. By constantly introducing advanced international environmental concepts and experience, a nature reserve network system with rational distribution has gradually taken shape in the demonstration area, which effectively raised public awareness for protecting biodiversity. To further environmental cooperation in the subregion, Xu Qinghua proposed all member countries, ADB and related international organizations should help each other and jointly build environmental cooperation platform. They should share benefits and follow the path of green development, work together to protect the environment and promote the development of biodiversity protection and comprehensive capacity. These proposals were highly acclaimed by participants. The meeting reviewed the results of the core environmental project in the first phase and introduced national action plan for the second phase of core environmental project. Echoing the to-be-held Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, the meeting also had discussions on the theme of "toward regional green economy". The participants all agreed that environment and development would be the direction of subregional cooperation. Promoting sustainable development of the subregion would make great contribution to the international sustainable development cause.
