The current standard is developed for the purpose of implementing Environmental Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China, standardizing biodiversity assessment indicators and methods, understanding current status, spatial dist and change trend of biodiversity in the whole country and each province, autonomous region and municipality, identifying the priorities for protection of biodiversity at national and local levels and raising the capacity of our country in management and protection of biodiversity. The current standard specifies the contents such as indicators and their weight for assessment of biodiversity, data collection and treatment, calculation method and grade classification. The current standard is applicable to assessment regional biodiversity with county-level administrative area as the basic unit.
