The current standard is developed for the purpose of implementing Environmental Protection Law of the People's Republic of China and Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution, protecting the environment, ensuring human health and standardizing the determination method for total nitrogen in water. The current standard specifies the alkaline potassium persulfate digestion UV spectrophotometric method that determines total nitrogen level in water. The current standard is applicable to the determination of total nitrogen in surface water, groundwater, industrial effluent and sewage. The former national environmental protection standard "Water quality─Determination of total nitrogen─Alkaline potassium persulfate digestion UV spectrophotometric method"(GB11894—89) approved and released by the former State Environmental Protection Administration on December 25, 1989 shall be nullified since the date of the implementation of the current standard.
