The thermostat of air conditioners should be set no less than 26 degrees Celsius in summer and no higher than 20 in winter to save energy and resources, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said Tuesday in a document advocating eco-friendly behavior.

The ministry issued an Eco-Friendly Behavioral Norm for Citizens (Trial) with the Ministry of Education and three other government agencies on Tuesday, the fourth China Environment Day, according to a statement sent to the Global Times on Tuesday.

The document listed 10 ways of improving the ecology and environment in everyday life, such as not keeping up with rapid upgrades in electronic products.

The document also encourages reusable shopping bags and water bottles.

The norms likewise encourage low-carbon transportation and garbage sorting.

The document was part of the three-year eco-friendly practices from 2018 to 2020.

The practices proposed by the five agencies aim at promoting eco-environmental protection at schools, communities, companies and rural areas.

Citizens are encouraged to report activities that damage the environment.
