The current standard is developed for the purpose of implementing Environmental Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China and Law of the People’s Republic of China on Promotion of Cleaner Production, protecting the environment and providing technical support and guidance for cleaner production in alcohol industry. On the bases of meeting national and local environmental protection standards, the current standard specifies the general requirements for cleaner production in alcohol industry in accordance with current technology, equipment and management level of the industry. The current standard is divided into three grades: Grade I represents internationally advanced level on cleaner production; Grade II represents nationally advanced level on cleaner production; and Grade III represents basic level of cleaner production in China. The current standard will be revised at appropriate time with continuous development and progress of technology. The current standard specifies general requirement for cleaner production in alcohol industry. It divides cleaner production indicators into the following five types, that is, production process and equipment requirement, resource and energy utilization indicators, pollutant generating indicator (before end-of-pipe treatment), waste recycling & reuse indicator and environmental management requirement. The current standard is applicable to review of cleaner production of alcohol enterprises that manufacture alcohol through fermentation and distillation technology with cereal, potato and yam, molasses as raw materials, judgment of cleaner production potential and opportunities, assessment and publication system for cleaner production performance. It is also applicable to environmental management systems such as environmental impact assessment system and pollutant discharge license system. The current standard is published for the first time in China.
