This standard is formulated for the purpose of implementing the Environmental Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China and Law of the People’s Republic of China on Prevention and Control of Water Pollution, protecting the environment, safeguarding people’s health, and setting standards for vocabulary on water quality. This standard provides the terms on properties of water quality. The vocabulary provided by this standard refers to the terms on water quality and includes the terms and definitions (including corresponding English terms) in its Part 5. The term may be the same as mentioned in domestic and overseas publications but may have different definitions while applied in different fields. This part of vocabulary shall be equivalent to Water Quality-Vocabulary Part 5 (ISO 6107.5-2004), and the English terms shall be the same as the latter. Some terms may be provided twice, with different definitions and interpreted under different circumstances. This standard is the amendment to Water quality-Vocabulary-Part 1 and Part 2 (GB 6816-86) and Water Quality-Vocabulary Part 3~Part 7 (GB 11915-89). Water quality-Vocabulary-Part 1 and Part 2 (GB 6816-86), which was approved and promulgated by the former National Environmental Protection Agency on October 10, 1986, and Water Quality-Vocabulary Part 3~Part 7 (GB 11915-89), which was approved and promulgated by the former National Environmental Protection Agency on December 25, 1989, shall be abolished as of the day this standard goes into effect.
